Welcome & Introductions

  • 1.  Reading any good books lately?

    Posted 05-13-2019 13:53
I don't know about you guys, but one of my 2019 goals was to read more books--and I've been terrible at it so far! Right now, I'm halfway through Nightmares and Dreamscapes by Stephen King (a collection of short stories--I highly recommend it if you enjoy horror and thriller genres!).

Have you read any good books this year? Or do you have any to recommend to other BGS members?

I'm currently reading "The Crying of Lot 49" by Thomas Pynchon and "Ubik" by Phillip K. Dick. I usually enjoy reading novels that are dystopic, futuristic and dark comedies.

If you like Stephen King you should read his autobiography! It's really interesting to read about his early life and writing process.

Are you talking about On Writing? I've already read it! I agree, it's a very fascinating book. It's been about 10 years since I read it, I think, so I'm due to give it another go.

I haven't read any Pynchon, but someone has recommended him to me.

A few books I've read recently:
    • A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson. I've read other Bryson books in the past and love him as an author. He throws a bit o wit/sarcasm/humor into some serious topics, making them more easily digestible.
    • Trouble Boys: The True Story of The Replacements by Bob Mehr. I love music in general and love reading books about musicians, but specifically for this book, I grew up in Minneapolis and love The Mats.
    • One More Thing by BJ Novak. Came to this via BJ Novak's children's book (The Book With No Pictures) that my kids love - didn't know he was an author too. Back in the days I made more time for it, I used to read a lot of short story collections.

    Thanks, John!
I haven't read A Short History of Nearly Everything, but I think I'll recommend that to my brother--he's a very sarcastic engineer. This seems like it would be up his alley.

I didn't realize it, but BJ Novak is an actor from The Office (the US version). His name sounded familiar, but it didn't click until I googled him and immediately recognized him.

Noora, I love Sir Arthur Conan Doyle! I really enjoy a good mystery. I have a large collection of his Sherlock Holmes stories, and apparently there are a lot more I haven't read yet.

    Greetings,

Currently I am reading "Success Principles" by Jack Canfield and find it very useful.  New Year's resolutions can drift away and this is helping to get things going again.  I am hoping to read "Find the Fire" by Scott Mautz after that.

    Have a great day!

    Hi there,

I really appreciate this discussion! There's been some good advices already.

I would like to add two more to the growing list:

    1. Factfulness - Ten reasons we're wrong about the world and why things are better than you think by Hans Rosling:
Some might know him already from TEDTalks on Youtube.com or so. He used to be a famous world health researcher and doctor, who wrote this factbased eye-opening book about the current state of human development. Writing almost in speech style, makes it joyful and easy to read. I believe EVERYONE who claims him-/herself to be a responsible leader and decision maker should be firm about the ten instincts Mr. Rosling identified for us.

    2. Sapiens - A short story of humankind by Yuval Noah Harari:
This is a little more challenging to read though also is potentially capable of broadening your world view. Mr. Harari describes what identifies man as man, what makes us genius but also what makes us dangerous as a species. He tells our story with lively examples, presenting transparantly-evaluated guesses why things turned out the way they did. I absolutely love both of them!!

I hope I could inspire some of you :)

    Greetings!!
